About our library
At Raymond School we believe in offering a wide variety of literature titles, genres and subjects in our classrooms and libraries. . Students that are exposed to a library with multiple selections become informed readers and lifelong learners that are able to form opinions, think, and express themselves creatively in their journey to become members of our community. Fostering your child’s cognitive development is just as important as nurturing his or her emotional and physical development. Cognitive development includes language skills, information processing, reasoning, intelligence, and memory.
At Raymond School we also believe that families and parents have a right to select the books their child is reading. Sometimes parents prefer that their children do not read or experience different topics or books until they feel they are ready or until they have had a chance to preview the material. It is parents that have the right and responsibility to restrict access of their own children to these experiences and topics. Raymond School cannot assume the role of parents or the functions of parental authority in the private relationship between parent and child.
IN OUR CLASSROOMS
Our school staff works very hard at communicating with parents when a piece of engaging literature is available to or will be presented to students as part of the curriculum. Our teachers will typically send home information regarding the title(s) to be shared with students. Parents have the ability to further discuss the content with the teacher and even have the ability to “opt-out” of the experience for their children (alternative educational activities will be provided).
IN OUR LIBRARY
Libraries represent different things to different people, our library is open to all. It provides a wide range of materials on different levels of difficulty, with diversity of appeal, and representing different points of view– but not all materials will fit every individual student. The structure of our library displays, groups books by interest, theme, reading level, and topic. Age-appropriate books are arranged specifically for the readers that would be most interested. Books that have content suited for older students are labeled with YA- Young adult and are also housed in a separate section. The physical structure of our library makes it very easy for our librarian to see which students are looking at/selecting which books. Our library offers Destiny Discover Library (an online public access catalog) linked on our school website as an opportunity for parents to review titles available in our library.
If you have questions or would like additional input into your child’s library selections please contact Mrs. Hebron at [email protected]
